Usually, a hot summer day in Brighton is fantastic, with the opportunity to meet friends at the beach, to enjoy swimming and a BBQ. It’s a friendly and relaxed vibe, except on weekends, when most people come down from out of town and the central parts of the beach get very busy. This year, everything is different. I don’t think I have ever seen the beaches as packed with people like sardines, kids screaming, people stumbling across the streets drunk, more people arguing and screaming, and ambulances and police escorting people off the beaches. The atmosphere could only be described as hysterical. My favourite observation was to see a large group of drunk men next to a Coronavirus government poster that said to stay 2m apart. I didn’t see anyone that weekend who would have even remembered social distancing or that we are still in the middle of a pandemic.
